Q. What is Switchgear?

A.This is equipment, which is used to switch high voltage electrical circuits in and out. This can be for just general switching for things like maintenance, but also for circuit or equipment protection and when faults and failures are detected.

Q. What is a Tapchanger?

A. Tapchangers are multi position switches that allow the voltage on a transformer to be increased/decreased depending on the circuit load. When the number of electricity users increases the load on a circuit goes up and the voltage will then start to drop, so the tapchanger is used to bring the voltage back to within specified limits.

Q. What is a Transformer?

A. The transformer is a device that is used to increase/decrease the voltage and current through a shared magnetic field. By increasing the voltage, you decrease the current by the same factor, thus enabling electricity to be transmitted more efficiently, enabling the economic transmission of electric power over long distances.
