Why Maintenance is critical

The Tapchanger is one of the few components of a Power Transformer requiring regular maintenance. Unfortunately, this is all too often ignored with the potential of a catastrophic failure of the transformer, serious risk to public safety and disruption to electricity supplies as a result. The potential impact on your business is too serious to ignore whilst the costs of avoiding this possibility, considering that a transformer is potentially your most expensive asset, are relatively small in comparison.

Problems can occur with the mechanical wear of the Tapchanger itself as a direct consequence of the large number of switching operations that these Tapchangers can experience. The Tapchanger contacts and current carrying braids are also particularly vulnerable to wear and can fail if not monitored and changed when necessary,

 It is therefore essential that inspection checks and maintenance are carried out at periodic intervals to cater for oil deterioration, arcing contact wear and mechanical wear of the mechanisms themselves.
